Jack Nolan:
Obama Installs Enthusiastic James
Comey as New Director of FBI
After
what seemed much deliberation and fierce competition Obama installed James
Comey as the new director of the FBI. Comey's resume is filled with impressive
accomplishments, but what set him apart from the rest of the competition was
his calm and cool nature. Obama puts his whole trust in Comey while also
warning him that the "country expects a lot" from him.
Comey
followed up with an introductory address which was overtly grateful. He spent
much of his time thanking family and friends who helped him reach this point,
then rather abruptly goes into what the FBI's crest means to him. He indicates
Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity- the words on the FBI's crest- are the
cornerstone of the institution.
Fidelity to Comey is and indication
that the FBI wont overreach, and indicates the condemnation of Martin Luther
King JR. as an example of such overreach. He says that each new member will be
required to attend the WW2 memorial and the MLK memorial to show them the
atrocities when things go astray.
Comey defines bravery as "the
willingness to endure fear" not the absence of fear. He stresses this
point and even compares his fear about his upcoming 10 years, to the fear of
his colleagues.
Finally, Comey Indicates integrity
as the most important attribute for the FBI. He says the integrity of the FBI
is "a gift that must be protected and earned" at all cost. Nothing is
worth risking integrity to Comey.
